Why Canon at all

I chose canon because it is the only make where the PC software can control the camera to take images. I am purchasing the S50 next week.

I am wanting to start down the digital route and currently looking at the options of the EOS 10D and the new G5. I am wanting to use the chosen camera for landscape shots, equivalent to a 50mm focal length SLR.

I understand the EOS 10D does not come with a lens and was wondering whether anyone could recommend a suitable lens for this sort of work.

As I currently see it the G5 will give me around 5 megapixels whilst the EOS 10D will give me around 6.5 megapixels.

Is it worth my investment of more than double the G5 for the EOS 10D?

Could anyone recommend a suggested route?

I recently purchased a Elan 7E, my purchase decision are due primarily to the following:
The cost was cheaper then a Nikon 80.
I also liked where Canon was going with their digital cameras and IS lenses. I will eventually purchase a DSLR, but I can't afford it yet.

I have had a Cannon since my first AE1 a long time ago. I upgraded to the EOS system in 1995 with an EOS 5 and now have a D60. Love the Camera's love the lenses. Would really like to play with the 1Ds, but can't jsutify the price as I am just a weekend shooter... But I am also a resolution junkie... Oh Well

I was literally forced to switch. I have a Minolta 800si, but Minolta decided they were not going to make an SLR style digital and I can’t afford 2 lens systems. This about made me cry. I looked at both Canon and Nikon very closely. I like the quietness of the Canon system. Also I decided I would like the 10d to replace my Medium Format because of it’s powerful AF in low light. So I’m switching to Canon. I’ve started with an e-bay purchased A2. This I have found to faster than my Minolta but not built quite as heavy. Still, I am growing fond of it.

I went the other way. I have EOS Rebel G and IX bodies and several lenses= ; but when I went digital, I opted for the Minolta DiMAGE 7i. It's smaller and = lighter than any EOS outfit (weighs about the same as my 28-200 zoom), allows man= ual selection of EVERYTHING (including manual override of autofocus), and cos= t less than any EOS digital available at the time. Further, it allows me to sho= ot wide-angle (covers the same fields as a 28-200 on a 35mm camera) whereas = any affordable digital body so far would turn my widest lens from a 28mm to a= 42mm or 45mm.

But I'm still keeping the EOS stuff, for the foreseeable future. (And my = old Olympus OM stuff, too.)

The way digital is changing, Iam going to wait to buy a Digital SLR body. For now I will keep my Canon system (Film). Its sooooo ridiculous looking for a Dig. SLR. Go on the sites to buy useds Digi SLR's and guess what they are trying to sell used YES USED D30's for $1200-2000, D60's for $1500-2000. HELLO you can buy a new 10D for $1450. HELLO get a clue. I guess people are stupid enough to pay that amount for a used out of date Digi SLR. Geee I have a Elan IIe for sale $750. I think in the next year of 2 they will have a digi SLR in the 6-10 MP range Full frame for under $1000. Then I ll consider buying one. Or maybe Ill just pay $3000 for a used 10D NOT.
