Contax T3

Hi Paul.
I have a T2 which has served me extremely well down the years. It has never scratched a negative (so far.. here's hoping) but it is an excellent camera.

I intend to buy a good quality P&S camera for my wife. Candidates include Minilux, Cantax T3 and Rollei AFM 35. She is a casual user but she wants her pictures really sharp. Any advice?

KC, I own a T3, Minilux, and Minilux Zoom and for most situations I like the T3. The optics are sharper than the Leica lenses, the viewfinder is brighter, it's much smaller and lighter, and is less quirky in my opinion (and I know everybody has a different one). I find it easy to carry, responsive, and the metering is excellent. That said, the Minilux has a slightly faster max aperture and takes great photos. The price of a U.S. warrantied T3 has come down some lately also making it, I feel, a better buy thant the Minilux. I still wouldn't get rid of my Minilux, but if I had to choose one it would be the T3. Regards.

K C,

If sharp is your wife's goal, she'll want both an excellent lens and the ability to shoot using slower, finer grained film. The T3 offers an unbeatable combination compared to other P&Ss for achieving this goal, given it's 35mm/2.8 lens. It's a wonderful little camera.

Hi, I'm new to this board and I've just acquired my first Contax, the T3.
I've bought a black used one at B&H and so far I'm very happy with the results.
I intend to use 30/70 with color and b&w film, and I'm interested in the filter adapter, first for protection and also filtering towards more contrast.
It seems that most people here and at photo.net recommends B+W or Heliopan filters.
Which initial set should I look for? And which brand?
Appreciate any comment.
Thank you.

Alex:

B+W and Heliopan filters are excellent. Heliopan is more expensive of the 2 brands. I have a B+W Medium Yellow and Orange filters to increase contrast for b/w photography. Looking to get a Red down the road...

The design of the filter/hood adaptor does not allow it to be attached tightly to the lens barrel. So screw the filter onto the adaptor gently. Another thing: with the adaptor and filter/hood on the camera, it won't fit into the case. Of course, Contax has the optional CC-82 case that you leave the filter/hood on the camera and carry it around your neck.

Have fun... Niki

Very helpful suggestions.
I'm already considering the CC-82 case, it seems very practical.
Thank you Niki.
Alex.

Alex,

I've found that the T3 with adapter and hood fits very nicely into the Lowepro Z-10 camera pouch. I wear it on my belt, but it can also be worn with the included shoulder strap. I can find these at my local camera store, at Best Buy, and (of course) at numerous internet sites. US price is in the $10 to $15 range. The larger Z series pouches are too large for the T3, IMO.

For the 2nd time, the single plastic sprocket on my film take-up spool has worn/shorn off rendering the camera unable to load film.

It is in N. Jersey for warranty repair.

I see that several others have had this same problem. Hopefully, this time, Kyocera Optics will replace the flimsy plastic nub take up spool with with a spool with a more robust sprocket.

Can't they afford two or three teeth/sprockets rather than a single plastic nub?

I am wondering with all of the reports of the film take up spool on the T3 breaking if there are any independent camera repair facilities that do this kind of work and that could retrofit a part? It seems kind of silly to send it back to contax and have the same thing happen. I have never had this happen, wondering if it is more common than we are hearing here?
