General Flash Questions for Contax G1/G2

A few months ago, Photocare in NYC told me that the Contax TLA200 does not offer true TTL flash control. I posted this on another board and everyone disagreed with Photocare. Then again, Photocare is big on Leica.

Wilson, you wrote, "to give me full TTL control...." Would you mind explaining (I am not that familiar with flash equipment per se, but do know what TTL is, second curtain, etc) how you are getting TTL flash control in a non contax unit? Scott

Scott, Rather than have my amateurish explanation of how the Metz TTL system works, I would suggest that you go to the www.metz.de web site, which has an English language button and will explain all about their SCA 3000 system. I have the SCA 3802 module, which is specific for Contax/Yashica and either fits onto the SCA3000 cable/link unit for my big hammerhead Metz 45CL-4 flash or when it finally (Xmas post - Grrrrrrrr) arrives, onto the bottom of my new Metz 32 Z-2. This works on my 139Q, RX and G2 and the 230AF Yashica, now passed on to my daughter. It provides various levels of functionality dependant upon the camera but the TTL control and flash output control is first class. With both flash heads on the 45CL-4 up at full power, it is very powerful and if that is not enough, you can always go up to the 70 CT unit which will fry eyeballs at 50 meters. Wilson

Hi, would anuone know how a Metz 70 MZ-4 would perform with a G2 and if there are any drawbacks, except from the size/weight. I can pick up one relatively cheap to use with my Nikon AF but this would only make sense if I would be able to use it with the G2 as well.

ahhh ..... forgot this in the last thread....

I really need a flash with the Contax. I find the contax flashes expensive size-- and performance wise thats why the Metz 70 ... might there be another solution which anyone of you have tested.

Reading Mr. Wilson s thread on the sca3000 combine with 3802 metz module .... according to the metz site this is not a possible combination, it clearly advizes to make use of the sca 382 adapter...... I get more and more confused at G2 flash issue ....

Hi

I work with the Metz 45 ct-5 (similar to Cl-5) and the sca 382 adaprtor. It's a very good combination.

Michaela,

Further to my earlier post; if you are worried about it, I am happy to scan and email you a copy of the application and function page of the SCA3802 module which clearly shows that this module is compatible with the G2 and lists all the available functions. When I was having problems with my 45CL-4 (two successive faulty SCA3000 cables, new from Hasselblad UK!) I was speaking fairly frequently to the UK agents Hasselblad. They confirmed that the SCA300 system is no longer made and they are ony selling old stock until exhasuted. There is nothing the the 300 system does that the 3000 system does not do equally or better and there are additional features on the 3000. Wilson

Michaela,

I use a Metz 45CL-4 with an SCA3000/3802 TTL link with my G2 and it works very well indeed. I bought it for my RX but it works just as well with my G2. I can see no reason your 70 MZ-4 would not be just as good. You can check for compatibility of the various components on www.metz.de but ignore the bit that says to use an SCA300/382 on the G2 as this is out of date since the SCA300 system is now obsolete and has been replaced by the SCA3000 system for all applications. The system works so well that I am waiting for delivery on a Metz 32 Z-2 which will also use the SCA3802 module but directly fixed onto the flash to give me a more portable unit. Wilson

I'm searching for a not to big Metz Flash to go with my G2. I'd appreciate one that goes with the SCA 3000 System. The flash should be able to be turned for indirect flashlight but should be nice to carry, too. I liked the very compact flashs like 40 MZ 3i or 40 MZ 2, but this line doesn't seem to be continued anymore. The Metz website recommends with my specifications the 54 MZ 3 or the 44 MZ 2. Does anybody have experinece with those flashes and the G2 or with the above mentioned 40 MZ 3i or 2?
Thanks, Yours Clemens
