New Epson Printers for Contax Images

Thanks for posting that link - I have used black only printing a number of times with sometimes fair results . Reading this has prompted me to revisit this technique in a more experimental manner[now that I am a little more conversant with photoshop etc] . Thanks again . Steve

Hi Folks,

I am in the market for a photo printer. I have narrowed down the choice to two Epson models, the 1290s and the 950. I can't get any store locally to do me demo prints of the two printers. Has anyone any experience of both of these? I like having the option of A3 from the 1290, but does the 950 print better. Does one print B&W better than the other? The 950 seems to have better resolution and smaller droplet size and has the plus of direct cd printing as well. At the moment I am gravitating towards the 1290s. Am I going for 'old' technology, or should I go for the 950?

Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the Epson 1280 which I believe to be quite close to the 1290. Admittedly there has been much progress in printing technology since the advent of the 12xx series but I would not trade the capability to go 13"x19". I am very content with the quality of the prints, either at 1440 or 2880 resolution. I am also doing black and white on Epson archival matte paper and did not like the results with the original Epson cartridge- it yields a greenish hue (I use the black and white only setting on the printer). Eventually I ended up with compatible ink from MIS Associates which is much better for this type of paper and print setting.

Regards

Andrei

Hi Folks,

I tool the plunge and bought a 1290s. I liked the 950 but chose to have the A3 capability over the cd printing facility. The first few prints were abysmal at 720dpi, then I set the reolution to 2880. I used the supplied epson gloss paper and I was well impressed with the image. I shall now use this as my printing lab. At 2880 dpi it takes a loooonngg time to print an A4 image, so I am going to try the 1440 dpi setting to see what the difference looks like and what the time saved is.
I will also try and sort out the bulk ink kit that puts the ink supply out side the printer as it has a good thirst!

Thanks to you all especially to Andrei for his help.

If you do this you could also , of course , try the various pigmented inks available , rather than the usual dye-based ones - assuming that print longevity is important to you.... Steve

Hi Steve,
As a newcomer to this computer printing lark I have not got a clue as yet as to what is the difference between dye based and pigmented inks. Have you time to expand quickly?
Thanks,
Paul
