Birmingham with K7

Hello again. Just some ordinary Street Photos from today when I left work. Nothing amazing. I already know they are average !! Hopefully you like one of them.

Thank you for looking. Sorry nothing amazing today. I will try harder tomorrow !!

Hope i did not offend you.

Not at all. I am well aware that other aspects call for other compositions. E.g., at the spot I would have liked to walk to the middle of the street and take the shot from there with the two lines towards me and the tram approaching. But that would possibly not be possible at all due to traffic.

I would be interested in a serious conversation about such things. Most photographers, also on this site, only want to be applauded for images they think are perfect and interesting. Often, they are neither. I stopped long ago to step in and very gently point out that the image could be much better. Sometimes, they liked it, but more often, they didn't. So, I stopped doing so. Even on pages dedicated to photo critique, I got very cautious.

I recently got criticized on 100ASA for an image that was "underdeveloped and boring". And the man was right! With a fresh eye, I improved that image a lot. In my opinion, 100ASA is one of the best sites in this regard. Even there, open critique is rare. Most just give low grades.

First, I want to be clear that I had no objection to your comments regarding the SF cable car photo. Cropping the bottom led to more emphasis on the cable car by removing the parked cars which some might see as a distraction. Others liked the slow roll of the hill in the uncropped foreground. All fine with me.

HOWEVER, (always a however, eh?) I do have a bit of an issue with part of the quoted paragraph.

I don't think most photographers on this site only "want to be applauded for images they think are perfect and interesting." First, many images are shared in a rather social way with full knowledge that their submission is not perfect and certainly not interesting to everybody, but probably interesting to some. Images come and go, conversation rolls along, and I think most folks do learn things or get new imaging ideas along the way.

Second, there is no such thing as a perfect image because there is no universal consensus on "perfect image." Further, the qualities of what we consider "good" or "better," or even "perfect" no doubt vary between landscape artists and say photo journalists. And the portrait people want something else again.. And the viewers of said images come with all kinds of expectations. You get the idea.

My own suggestion is that we pay attention to a quote from Elliott Erwitt -- "It's about time we started to take photography seriously and treat it as a hobby."

The light was flat today. Bright but Cloudy Flat light. So it not only flattened the pictures but meant I was not really believing that I could capture much that I was going to like much. So the energy or attitude was not great today. I decided to post 5 though ( it is a pity to break the cycle and I am counting on some motivation for tomorrow so I have posted 5 to keep the train going ) but I am warning you in advance. Below average shots from my usual average output on this thread. So yes . . even worse than usual ! Sorry ! No proper evening sun to get the juices working as they should be on this series.

Fantastic shot on the Dpreview forum landscape taken with K3iii monochrome camera. The thread is bit crazy so I don't want to get involved but the one picture is very good indeed. Not bad when he has only had the camera just days or something. Hats off to Sullyg. One is crazy good even with his detest of filters. He got a result in my opinion. YMMV.

Here are my below average ones today.

Thanks for looking. Hope to do better tomorrow. Celebrating the new Ricoh K3 iii monochrome new release even when sun was gone.

Excellent performance of the K7 on the bicycle test ;)

Happy Weekend.
If you hate Street Photography then do not even bother here. These are just ordinary Friday evening shots in my local city centre whilst on my way back from work.
4 of the shots are with Pentax Shake Reduction at 30th second with an equivalent magnification of a 420mm on a full frame K1. Yes they are not all pin sharp but for me I like that they exhibit drama and movement which is a very very good thing in Street Photos. It can work very well. IBS is so important to me and useful many many times.

Here are some of Today's. Nothing special. Just Street Photos taken today to celebrate the release of the Ricoh K3 iii monochrome camera release. I hope you like something. I could have posted a lot more than 5 today. I shot into near dark with my Pentax K5 with 200mm onto my 1.4 converter. Yes I am a bit crazy with my gear choices. Oh and it was raining. Lucky the 135mm F2 was at home this time. Weather sealing provided all the peace of mind i needed in order to relax and shoot.

I like #3 and #5, but all are good. I like it when you don't cut off the feet. Don't take that as criticism, since I tried some street shooting today and guess what? I cut off the feet.

These are great. Super indeed. Very well done.

Regarding my photos feet missing. Yes i chop the feet from loads. It does not concern me. Sorry you disagree but I will still post my favourites that I think are my favourites to make up a set of 5.

Regards Dino26323 and keep them coming. Keep this train going for now. Your photos are a good relief from yet more Birmingham city shots so they make a visit more interesting to the people that have a quick look at Pentax SLR Talk here.

I know there's renewed interest in monochrome images, and even film cameras ... and I spent most of my working life shooting and dealing with B/W film and paper processing ... BUT... I think I'm changing. I like the color street images that have been coming from newmikey in Haifa and now Jason. I especially think color works well for the "crowd" scenes, while B/W works well for simplicity and separation. Just "thinking out loud" about the differences.

Dino: Have you shot any of your Birmingham series in color just to see how it compares? Just asking, not suggesting...

Hi RBIV ok YES and actually Page 4 of this thing i did actually confess that some are great in colour to Marantha i think it was after they said mono was working for me. This is what i said as follows :

" Some are better in colour but I think it is a bad idea to keep swapping over back and forth. Visually better to stick with Black and White ". I stand by what I said back then. As a set of pictures it works better in black and white only as a set. A different time I might show the very best ones over into colour that are better in colour but not in this thread. Also i swear to you that if it was not for the new Ricoh monochrome camera released then there would be no Street Pictures at all to look at these past weeks. I have not shot street photos in ages. The drive to take these pictures is completely from the new Pentax camera so it would seem daft to do them in colour. ( MANY MANY OF THEM I PREFER TO SHOW IN BLACK AND WHITE. Many many of them BUT there will be likely more people that think those same ones are better in colour. Thus they are not seeing the photos in the same way that i see them. Who is right ? the masses who take a vote OR the photographer that shot them. That is a good question.

Always in digital it is a complex decision whether the black and white is worse or better. Landscapes is often tricky which one to choose. So in that sense the black and white momochrome camera is at a disadvantage you could say since it only does black and white.

I will have a think and come back to this. It seems obvious that I do not let you see the colour ones. Everyone would be saying the colour ones are better even though they are not in my opinion. As a set black and white is far better. You cannot have some in colour and then some in black and white. It will degrade both versions.
