Dear all,

There's been rumors that the vey late M6TTL had brass and no more zinc top plates. My was bought in december 2002, serial number 2732441. Can some one confirm this?

Regards,
Leo

One other indication seems to be the boxed it shipped in. At one point I had a late M6 TTL and wondered the same thing. If it shipped in the new-style box (not plain white) there is a chance it was one of the last ones.

Melvin,

To tell the truth, my question does not concern picture taking. Leica decided the "historic" return to brass because this material can be painted and engraved. Zinc alloy can't - that's all. The MP is better because of its flare-free finder and - i suppose - a bit smoother and a bit more precise mecanics. Make the same body with zinc alloy top plate and there will be no difference (but then again, no engraving and no paint).

Leo

P.S. I just e-mailed our friends from Solms and asked them directly. In a week or so i'll have the answer - will keep the forum informed.

I received the answer from Leica. Brass. They say "the latest edition of LEICA M6TTL with zinc diecast topplate have serial-number 24...."

Hello all,
So much information, some that I don't think I even needed to know. But I do know that my M-6 with serial number 247XXXX has a zinc top plate. What will I do with this information? Glad I found the site, all the reading is great.

It seems the majority of you guys are buying Leicas brand new, I've found used M6 bodies for sale in the region of £500-£700 (not sure what would be in dollars)with a few scuffs and worn paint work. Are they worth going for?? Or should I keep saving?
