Dear Ebernezer,

The closure of Leica will be a far greater loss than any car company. I can speak from personal experience as none of the companies you mentioned advanced automotive engineering.

Leitz/Leica in its latest iteration under Lothar Kölsch did advance optics to another level.

Sadly I suspect Leica Camera AG will ultimately disappear when the current owners have "milked" the name.

In the meantime stock up on some old cameras for spare parts as one does with a Studebaker, Packard or pre 1965 Rolls-Royce.

> I say, let us judge the product on its actual merits. In other words, let's see the images and then make our judgments. It really pains me to see this kind of 'Leica will surely die because this product must be so bad even though I have not actually used it yet' rhetoric on this list too...

Thanks Marc! :)

Geex other people, why the heck are you so tanj pessimistic?! You should be happy that SOMEBODY thinks enough of Leica to BUILD a digital back for an SLR that maybe .001 percent of photographers will buy!

You know, I've seen people putting Leica lenses on Canon Digital SLRs (bleah), so what's your problem with this? Digital is here to stay, but film has a good market too. You know, not everyone WANTS to use a computer to run their lives with, so I'm happy Leica is trying different technologies and also keeping their manual film camera line alive.

Agreed 100%. Suggest we also wait to see Erwin's opinion based upon his skilled research. I may be crazy, but I do not think the Leica marque will disappear. The development of a digital back for the R camera is very much welcomed by at least one amateur here. I would be pleased to be able to use my Leica lenses and bodies for digital when I desire, and film when I prefer that approach. Heck, if Hasselblad can make the H1, why can't Leica make the RDig? Give the Leica engineers a chance. They have a well deserved reputation for excellence and innovation.

As long as the photos look better than they do with the Digilux 1 (cough cough - outside voice). Go Leica!

Oh wow... Look, I've seen some CRUMMY Digilux photos, not many great ones. I guess I'm going to have to pick up a camera for myself and do some shooting with it.

The Digilux is a very capable camera - I have used mine a lot and find it to be quite handy (easy to manipulate). It makes nice pictures under most conditions, but not all. It is particularly bad for landscape photography, for ex&le, and it MUST be forced to ISO 100 unless you want to post-process noise out of the images. But, as noted, at ISO 100 it is still able to make good images in pretty low light. I also really like the exposure and FOCUS bracketing features, and the ability to use an external flash with a specific aperture. The 49mm filter adapter is great, allowing all kinds of cool add-ons like a polarizer or diopters. The preview screen is to die for :)

If you want to see some more Digilux pics, check my PAW / FOM page, it has a few on it:
