I was an avid street shooter when I was younger, but I seldom used long lenses. About 80% of my street shots were done with 28 and 35mm lenses. But looking thru them recently, I noticed one of my favorites (which I'll take the liberty of adding here to this thread, hope that's OK), and was one of the few shot with a 200mm SuperTakumar lens. Do you ever use wider lenses for your street shots?

That is a fantastic shot and is a great example why Street shot photography can be great work. Love it.

Most of my shots over the yrs are with a 50mm F1.4 onto Apsc K7 and are night shots. I kind of go through phases with different kit. The K01 has my most popular Print from my city shots with 2 people picking it out over a selection of 100s of 18 x 12 inch prints. Twice it was picked out. That is with the Sigma art 30mm tiny ApSc lens. I will post some of them. Feel free to make this thread more interesting.
The kit you use on the Streets can really change things up. I guess I use 50mm most of all but that is really like a 75mm on FF camera.

I am not sure why I watch this thread, looking through all those images. But if I think about it, I am searching for inspiration. That is, images that inspire me to try my best to get a similar result. It is always related to my own photography. This might not be the best approach. I might never come back to San Francisco again, so why worry how to photograph the trams? But I learn new things all the time, even off the most boring images. How can this be improved? What would I have done? Etc.

In this case, it is obvious to me that I'd have cropped the image to the scene below (sorry, if editing is not wished here). But I understand that the cars in front may also contribute to the image. So, it a matter of style, isn't it?

Well, to be honest here.... I like the cropped version you did better too.

You are right that these things are subjective. Street Photography is very subjective. A lot of people do not agree on any merit with street photos at the best of times.
I hate being negative to someone because no good rarely comes out of it. I must say though that I prefer the original picture. There are definite reasons for this that I can explain. The cropped version is not as good but that is just my opinion. Do not be offended. Most people may well agree with you.

Sorry to be arguing here but the original crop is superior ( but that is my opinion )
The whole picture is based on the unusual and powerful curves in the road that are enhanced with the telephoto. Also the original shows a curve in the tram lines at the bottom of the picture that is adding to the effect that has been captured. You can see the road levelling up on the original. ALSO the cars. There is nothing wrong with the cars. It looks like also the wing mirror is lit up by sunlight flashing highlights. I am a massive Salgado fan. In his pictures there is a subject and then there are secondary and third and fourth subjects. The highlights of the sun are to me important to add more to the picture. These things are subjective BUT i prefer the original crop by some distance. ( These things are subjective always anyway regards cropping )

The KINK or CURVATURE of the road at the bottom of the frame is an important part of the picture. Too important. That should not be cropped out. Where do you see a road like that? Not often. The cropped version shows a road that I can " copy" very closely in Birmingham. I cannot produce that kink in the road though. Street Photography is subjective always anyway. Most people think it is all rubbish ( they may have a point if the image is easily repeatable BUT that is wrong too like in this image that is no longer repeatable perhaps. )

Hope i did not offend you. Your opinion is just as important as mine. If you do prefer a shot cropped then that means you do. I am not saying you are wrong. Everyone has different opinions and that is fine. I just wanted to point out that I did not agree and I hope I did that without offense. I love the shot actually so I would not crop it.
